Life / Writing / Blog Update
I've been away all summer, living in Washington D.C. as I completed an internship, but now I'm home and, to be honest, I had forgotten about this blog in all that time. In my defense, I had a lot going on and every day was jam-packed with work, grocery shopping, and then some "me time" in the evening. Actually, that "me time" was more like "me and my sister time". Since my sister works remotely, she decided to move to D.C. with me, split rent, and go into the city in her free time. So, in the evenings, we would binge "Once Upon A Time" or "The Office". It was a great summer.
Anyway, I'm home now! I'm starting another semester of graduate school, applying to medical schools, and enjoying life. I'll be posting updates on my medical school journey, including application stress and backup plans for applying next year if I don't get accepted this time around. To be honest, I'm typing this out at about 10pm, so I'll wait to post the first medical school update.
While I expect graduate school, my part time job at a laboratory, medical school applications, family time, and other activities will occupy most of my life, I still hope to spend a good deal of time writing my books this fall and next spring. I'll post an exciting new update on that right now: I FINISHED MY SERIES!!! I'm so thrilled about that! It's 6 books long, and written in third-person past-tense. Yes, that detail is important, because after I finished the series, I decided that I wanted to try my hand at writing in first-person present-tense so yessir, I am re-writing the entire series in first-person present-tense. I tested it out on the first couple of chapters of the first book and I loved it so much that I'm committed to rewriting the entire series that way. It might be crazy, and it's certainly a lot of work, but consider the benefits. Firstly, I can write the emotions of the characters way easier. Their opinions and unspoken thought processes are very hard to write in third-person (at least for me). Secondly, when I write all 6 characters' POVs in third person, the "voices" get meshed, as in, the tone/voice/attitude/etc. of the characters eventually lacked quirks and distinguishing aspects - all the characters' chapters sounded the same. In first-person, I can make those distinctions and make each character's voice unique. Thirdly, flashbacks are incredibly difficult to write in third-person; while they aren't a huge part of the story, there are a few (maybe 3) flashbacks that are necessary. Lastly, I just really like first-person, and I love this series (obviously). Re-writing it gives me a chance to re-live it (is that weird to say?) and edit heavily along the way. Oh yeah, that's another thing: as I rewrite, I'm able to make the big revisions that I was hoping for (major plot points need adjusting). Anyway, I'll stop rambling here and leave the rest for a future blog update.
Lastly, fall is coming! At least, sort-of. For a South Floridian, we have two seasons: summer and not-quite-summer. Still, it means all that lovely fall aesthetic that we so love (except that I don't like cinnamon or pumpkin, yikes!). I'll try to write a poem or two, waxing on the beauty of the season, and post it.
It's good to be back! I hope you all had a great summer too! God bless you!
He changes times and seasons; he deposes kings and raises up others. He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to the discerning.
